Oris adds a burgundy dial to the Big Crown Pointer Date

Oris has returned to its collaboration with the Swiss leather firm Cervo Volante for a new 40 mm Big Crown Pointer Date, reported on 29 September 2026, with a burgundy gradient dial and a strap made from sustainably sourced deer leather.
What has been announced
The watch — reference 01 754 7785 4038-Set — keeps the classic Big Crown Pointer Date formula: a 40 mm stainless steel case, 48.2 mm from lug to lug and 12.2 mm thick, with the line's fluted bezel and an oversized screw-down crown. The double-domed sapphire crystal carries an anti-reflective coating on the inside, the case back is screwed and fitted with a see-through mineral glass window, and water resistance is 50 metres.
The dial is a deep burgundy gradient, running towards dark red, with cathedral hands and Arabic numerals treated with Super-LumiNova. The date is read from a red-tipped pointer hand that circles a scale printed around the edge of the dial — the feature that gives the model its name. Inside is the Oris calibre 754-1, an automatic movement based on the Sellita SW 200-1, with 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, a power reserve of 41 hours and a stop-seconds device for precise setting.
The strap is dark brown deer leather with quick-release spring bars and a steel pin buckle, and every watch is delivered with a travel pouch made from the same material. The new edition is on sale now, priced at £1,900 in the UK, €2,250 in the eurozone and US$2,600 in the United States. It is a special edition, not a limited one.
A design that dates to 1938
The Big Crown joined the Oris collection in 1938 as the brand's first dedicated pilot's watch, and its oversized crown was designed so that pilots could operate the watch while wearing gloves. The Pointer Date version — which shows the date with a central hand instead of a window — has outlived almost everything else in the catalogue and is widely considered the brand's icon. The family spans sizes, metals and dial colours; this collaboration sits at the vintage-inspired end of it.
Cervo Volante is a Swiss leather goods company that sources its hides from Switzerland's deer population management programmes. According to the company, around 15,000 wild red deer are culled each year to keep the alpine forest in balance, and rather than letting the skins go to waste, they are tanned in one of the country's last remaining vegetable tanneries and made into straps and accessories. Oris began working with the firm in 2022, when a trio of 38 mm models arrived; a 40 mm version followed in 2025, and this autumn's watch is the latest in the series. The burgundy dial is close in tone to the one Oris used on an all-bronze reference in 2022, and the colour is drawn from the foliage of the forests around Hölstein, the brand's home since 1904.
What it means if you are buying or selling
The Big Crown Pointer Date sits at an accessible price and is widely traded, and the Sellita-based calibre is a practical strength on the pre-owned market: it is easy to service and inexpensive to maintain, which keeps running costs down and makes examples straightforward to sell on. A new dial colour does not by itself reprice earlier references, but a permanent, non-limited addition keeps the model in front of buyers — and autumn is the season for which this one was designed.
For sellers, the familiar rule applies: what a specific watch is worth turns on its reference, its condition, its completeness and its service history, not on the arrival of a new colourway. For buyers, the burgundy joins a line with a clear heritage and steady supply, which tends to be a more comfortable place to be than a launch-week limited edition. Either way, a valuation against current market conditions — rather than against a press release — is the sensible place to start.
